Personal Statement

My strong interest in the field of materials has accompanied me since I was a little girl, but I have been able to begin fully developing it as a result of the subtle influence on me exerted by my parents. Both of my parents are engineers in their factory. They enjoy their work in design with cloth materials and are happy to see that I am interested in materials, especially polymers. As the rudimentary teachers of mine, my parents made every effort to cultivate me to become an engineer of the highest quality and set up an excellent model for me. Such a wonderful environment for my growth inspired me a lot and enhanced my interest in this field. Thus, I chose materials and engineering without hesitation as my major during my undergraduate study in Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which is the one of the top ten universities in China.

Since I am quite interested in the field of my major, especially in Polymers and Composites, I have been studying very hard since the beginning of the course. As a student majoring in materials, which is a cross-over subject between physics and chemistry, I have to set up an overall and synthetic knowledge system of a wide range of curricula including advanced mathematics, college physics and chemistry. With a positive and active mind and readiness to work hard, in the first three years, my GPA ranked in the top 20% among 160 students of the same grade. At the same time, I closely watched the latest developments in the world of polymer research, and to my best ability, managed to make the lectures which were given by overseas professors clear. My hard work provided me with a firm basis and a broad mind to develop my interest. In the following years, I will continue to work hard in the courses that I am taking. At the same time, I have made great effort to strengthen the rigorousness of my way of thinking and improve my ability of operating. During my junior academic year, I accepted the strict training of doing experiments. The course’s Integrated Experiment module provided me with a chance to do quite a lot of experiments involving five fields of materials; not only in polymers and composites, but also in metal and ceramic, corrosion and protection, material physical properties and mechanic properties.

Although I always have an aspirant and ambitious manner towards my study, I am also a highly-motivated person with a very friendly personality. I like to make friends and try my best to help people. I usually don’t comment on their behavior or words, but I am quite good at analyzing situations for them and giving them suggestions from my point of view. So my friends have always trusted me and believed that my words are wise. As a result, every time I’ve had a new idea, they have supported me a lot.

During the third year of my campus life, I attended the FENGRU CUP hosted by my university, which is a technological contest for students to show their talents in their major. As the commissary in charge of studies in high school and college, and with excellent ability and understanding of knowledge and leadership, I organized a three-person research group. As the principal member of the subject of our group, I took charge of the experimental procedures. As we all know, flammability is a distinct feature of most polymers, however, the common flame retardant added to the polymers usually contains the element chlorine which is the main reason why the smoke released by the burning polymers is poisonous. At the same time, the addition of the flame retardant may degrade the mechanical performance of the materials. So I decided to make a project to find a perfect proportion of the flame retardant in order to achieve less smoke, low chlorine and no poison. We finally chose this subject, although it was very simple and basic, it was feasible for us and very meaningful. During the course of our experiment, we have met a lot of difficulties in using some experimental equipment which we were not familiar with, and there were a lot of details we haven’t considered. Every day, we discussed the plan for the next experimental step and summarized what we have done to make our plan more perfect. Gradually we got familiar with the complex experimental instruments and did better than before. Although we didn’t get any award finally, I really gained a lot from this competition and enjoyed the teamwork with other people.

Nowadays, the competition for jobs is increasingly fierce with the rapid development of the economy in China, which has the largest population in the world. In order to accustom myself to the fast pace of today’s social change, I have to continually improve my overall ability and become more competitive. I do believe that the Masters’ study of the MSc course in composite materials will be a great leap for me. I also believe the courses in Imperial College London, which has an international and unrivalled reputation, can provide me with what I am pursuing. If accepted, I would be very pleased to have the chance to meet a lot of intellectual people from different parts of the world. I think I will be able to take great strides towards fulfilling my professional objective. When I do, I believe I will be standing on the cutting-edge of material science.
